The Bioinspired Translational Microsystems Laboratory

Engineering complex human physiology in vitro

Who we are

The Bioinspired Translational Microsystems Laboratory or BioinSyst was established in Fall 2016 by Dr. Abhishek Jain who joined from Harvard University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M. As of Fall 2017, Dr. Jain’s lab has grown from one scientist to more than ten, and continues to prosper. We are a lab that is founded on a strong culture of interdisciplinary research, teamwork and mentoring. Anchoring upon these values, our goal is to contribute new biomedical discoveries and maintain an inspiring place to work.

Meet our people

What we do

Our mission is to impact healthcare research and practice by innovating a new technology platform that solves the most challenging problems in medicine and that can be launched into industry or clinic. The overarching theme of our lab is to harness the basic knowledge and tools offered by cell and molecular biology, biomechanics, microfabrication technology, biomaterials, and mathematics, in order to reconstruct the physical microenvironment of human tissues and organs in microfluidic devices, also known as organs-on-a-chip. These synthetic organs mimic complex disease states, predict responses to drugs and toxins, and serve as replacements to animal testing.

Our impact

The BioinSyst lab is currently specifically focused in modeling the physiology of the blood-vascular system. These efforts have led to the development of novel diagnostic and clinically-relevant microsystems that assess vascular dysfunction and blood clotting disorders. Our work has been published in prominent biomedical journals and our patented/patent-pending inventions have been licensed to industry.

We are now establishing several new projects using our approach with an aim to deliver near-term impact in translational medicine.
