The assignment is to split into teams of no more than
two to a side, one side pro and the other side con. Debate one of the following
questions. Note: Your presentations should reference articles from either the Wall
Street Journal or the New York Times.
1. In what manner and to what extent should the Tenth
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limit federal involvement in the economy?
2. Should the federal government limit through
antitrust regulation those corporate activities that tend toward reduced market
competition (e.g., mergers, monopoly, pricing constraints, or other
anticompetitive practices)?
3. In what manner and to what extent should the federal
government regulate the securities, credit, and banking industries in the U.S.?
4. In what manner and to what extent should the
role of government be simply to protect property versus promote the general
welfare of the community?
5. Should management of fiscal policy (i.e., aggregate
levels of taxation and spending) be placed under the control of a board similar
in design to the Federal Reserve Board?
6. Should the Federal Reserve Board be made more
accountable to the president and democratic institutions?
7. Should the federal government be required to
maintain a balanced budget, as is currently required in most of the fifty
states?
8. Should the U.S. do more to regulate pollution that
causes global warming?
9. Should the U.S. more strongly regulate various types
of discrimination against women, the elderly, minorities, and the
handicapped?
10. Should the U.S. use more social programs to assure
a minimum standard of living for all Americans?
