Steve,

Your "Fueling The Fire" was excellent. There are a few things I'd like to let you know about.

When I started racing the 260 mile TexasWaterSafari I asked my brother for advise. Rocky runs marathons, ultra-marathons, & long distance bike races.

What he taught me was that most of the people he competes with use the products from HammerNutrition.com, http://www.hammernutrition.com/ in particular, their E-Cap pills to enhance your stamina and maintain your body electrolytes and minerals.

This year during the Safari I took: 1-RaceCap, 2-EnduroCaps & 1-SuperAO (anti-oxidant) about every 8hrs. I took 1-Endurolyte (electrolyte replacement) about every 2hrs. I used their carbo powder mix called SustainedEnergy and drank 2-3 sports bottles full per day and ate 2-3 Harvest PowerBars per day. I took 1-lb. of good beef jerky and nibbled on it till it ran out (Sunday afternoon). I should have taken 2 lbs.... One nice thing about SustainedEnergy powder mix is that it is bland in flavor and not sweet. We flavor it with their HammerGel product in whichever flavor we want our carb drink to taste. They have some "GREAT" flavors. We also like to mix the flavors (Espresso/Raspberry). note: UltraFuel from GNC is very sweet with an orange flavor. It is important to consume your PowerBars and carbo drink slowly. Take a bite of PowerBar and a sip of drink about every 5min. Most of us in the Safari have found that if you eat a whole bar and/or drink a whole sports bottle full of carbo drink that your stomach can't handle all of the carbs at once and you get a bad, upset, acid stomach and at your current exertion level, end up chunking it all.

On the second day at 5 in the afternoon, at the 5th checkpoint, I got out and took a rest for about an hour and ate a military MRE (turkey breast w/potatoes&gravy). At Checkpoint 6, 42hrs. into the race, was the first time I got out of the boat to sleep for 1 hour. My routine was the same on the 3rd day. I didn't stop to eat another meal till the finish (75hrs. 27min). I did stop and sleep 1-hour at Checkpoint 10 before having to make the 8-mile bay crossing into a 15mph headwind to the finish.

I've used the HammerNutrition/E-Cap products for the last two years and have never even felt close to bonking or running out of energy. The only thing to consider is getting sore from continuous paddling and fighting the sleep. I took Ibuprophen or Aspirin for the soreness and NoDoz to fight the sleep.

You have to stay in the boat and paddle!!!! Camping, cooking & sleeping don't get you there. We travel as light and fast and non-stop as possible.

If you'd like some more information, take a look at: "What to eat during the Safari" & "General Tips & Suggestions ?" on the Texas Water Safari website http://ops.tamu.edu/x075bb/safari/index.html You won't believe what some people take to eat on the Safari. The girls all take lots of chocolate...
