LOOKING FOR ALLIGATOR LAKE

These two pictures were taken about 6 pm on the Monday of the 1997 Safari. The shot of Jack was looking upstream just a short distance after pulling out of the Guadalupe. You can see the river in the right portion through the trees. The shot of Mark was looking downstream toward Seadrift Cut. After being very cautious about ferrying across the cut and successfully getting in the left channel we encountered our biggest problem of the race. Right after the first turn in this left channel we failed to get past a tree on the left hand side. The boat gave a loud crack as it submerged out of sight under a tree. We were able to pull the boat out by the stern and despite a severe bend in the starboard gunnel and a tear in the Kevlar we were leak free and continued into Alligator Lake. This left us enough time to get to the salt water barrier before dark.
