I have published a number of articles in computer aided architecture conferences and journals, including several papers in ACADIA, CAAD Futures and EcaadE. My research teams usually include students with architecture background, who are interested conceptual design and construction. With a university grant, we have recently acquired a 3D printer and one laser cutter. This direction especially construction of unusual shapes will be more and more important part of my research work. All the papers can be downloaded from my webpage.

JOURNAL ARTICLES (PEER REVIEWED)

Conceptual Design:

E. Akleman, O. Ozener and V. Srinivasan, Rind Architecture, International Journal of Architectural Computing, 2005, Selected from ECAADE 2004 paper by O. Ozener, E. Mandal and E. Akleman, "Rind Modeling for Architectural Design", Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe: EcaadE'04, Copenhagen, Denmark, September 2004. (Paper)

Description:

Architectural Education:

G. V. de Velasco, N. Holland and E. Akleman, "The Challenge of Virtual Architecture", Journal of Design Sciences and Technology, Vol. 7, No. 1, 1999. ISSN 1270-0517. Extended from G. V. de Velasco, E. Akleman, "A Curriculum for Virtual Architecture", Proceedings of EuropIA'98, Paris, France, November 1998. (Paper)

Description: We address the expertise of the architect as potential foundation in the development of a new professional field, Virtual Architecture, in which a virtual environments is not a means for design but the end product of design. The paper demonstrates that Virtual Architecture fulfills the three Vitruvian principals of Architecture: firmitas, utilitas, and venustas.

History of Sculpting:

T. Akgun, A. Koman and E. Akleman, "Developable Sculptures of Ilhan Koman", Proceedings of Bridges 2006, London, 2006. (Paper)

Description: Ilhan Koman was one of the innovative sculptors of the 20th century. He frequently used mathematical concepts in creating his sculptures and discovered a wide variety of sculptural forms that can be of interest for the art+math community. In this paper, we focus on developable sculptural forms he invented approximately 25 years ago, during a period that covers the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Sculptural & Architectural Education:

E. Akleman, "Computer Aided Sculpting: A Multidisciplinary Course in Shape Modeling", Proceedings of Educational Program of SIGGRAPH'06, Boston, August 2006. (Paper)

Description: Computer Aided Sculpting course is an experimental interdisciplinary course that focuses on both artistic and scientific aspects of shape modeling. I have been teaching this course every year since 1996. The problems coming out of the course influenced the development of our Topological Mesh Modeling system, called TopMod. More than 10 students added new features to TopMod while they were taking Computer Aided Sculpting course as their projects. I have at least ten published papers and sketches about the techniques I have developed while I was teaching the course.
