Research

I have been working with various research projects since I was in my undergraduate program. Generally, my research experience could be divided into 3 phases according to different areas in which I have worked.

Science and Engineering

When I was an undergrad and worked in an engineering institute later, my major research areas were intelligent instrumentation, electric measurement methods, etc. In addition, working as an information specialist, I also participated in several research projects with respect to information management, including the development of a MIS system for the department of Electric Measurement, and the development of the institute intranet.

Wan, Gang; Zhao, Xiangping, The Application of DSP on Electrical Instrumentation
In this article, the principle and application of Digital Signal Processor(DSP) were introduced in summary, then the feasibility and advantages of electrical instrumentation based on DSP were discussed, whereafter the design idea of a real project –the Multi-Function Electric Power Meter Based on DSP(TMS320F206), including the hardware block diagram and software flow chart was given.

WAN, Gang; ZHAO, Xiang-ping, The Power Measurement for High-distorted System
A correct method for measuring the fundamental component of power in a high-distorted three phase system is described, and its cost is rather low. The measuring circuit mainly consists of two pieces of 8-digit ADC and a piece of RAM. The data is sent to PC through interface after being sampled and the measuring accuracy is improved by using window-function, digital filtering and other software processing. Back to Top

Computer and Information Science

I worked 3 years in the multimedia lab in the School of Computer Science, Wuhan University as a research assisstant when I was pursuing my first master degree. Some projects in which I participated include the research of multimedia information retrieval against digital video databases, image processing and face recognition, Web-based 3D GIS system, etc.

WAN Gang , ZHOU Dong-Ru, Study on the Algorithm of Text Segmentation in Digital Video
In this article, three different algorithms of text segmentation, including threshold-based algorithm, splitting/merging based algorithm and texture based algorithm, were analyzed and evaluated, then, the author brought an efficient text segmentation algorithm as follow: first, an edge detection & projection based method is used to get text regions; second, text regions are segmented by threshold-based method.

CUI Yongyi,ZHOU Dongru,WAN Gang, Web VRGIS Study Based on VRML And JAVA
In recent years, Web GIS, especially Web VRGIS (Virtual Reality Web Geographic Information System), has attracted much attention from the GIS community. Web VRGIS is a new technology based on the Internet, developed after Web GIS. In this paper, we discussed some elementary technologies such as Spatial Data Engine, Basic Spatial Element on VRML, the GIS Hierarchy Management as well as Spatial Data Analyses (topological relations). As a result, we put forward a development model of Web VRGIS based on VRML, and gave a simple experiment system and its analyses. All the system designs are based on practices.

WAN Gang,ZHOU Dongru, Application And Prospect of Streaming Media on Campus Network
The principle of streaming media technology was introduced in the first part of this paper; then a complete solution of digital campus based on streaming media was put forward; finally the latest development and the prospect of streaming media technology were discussed.

Library and Information Science

In my current program, I found the impact of computer technology on the traditioanl librarianship is a significant issue today. I've been researching some computer technology trends in libraries, the development of library management systems and other library software, etc.
