VALUES
SOME DEFINITIONS
- Values are the determinants that influence people's choices in life and thus decide
their behavior. They are inherent in individuals as well as in societies and cultures. In
respect of individuals and cultures, values are circular. Existing in individuals, they
flow into and help shaping the culture; existing in cultures, they condition (without
categorically dictating) the values developed by individuals in those cultures.
- Values are mental programming that results from living within and experiencing a
cultural setting.
- Values are central tenets of a society's culture. They are explicit or implicit desires
of individuals or groups that influence the selection of means, ends, and actions.
- Values are emotionally-charged priorities. They direct people in a society to
selectively attend to some goals and to subordinate others.
VALUE CLASSIFICATION
- There are a wide range of classifications which have been developed over time in
psychology and sociology reflecting individual, group, organizational, and societal
values.
VALUES-ATTITUDES-BEHAVIOR CYCLE
- A work-oriented value usually influences a person's attitude toward incentives offered
by an organization. An incentive based on individual productivity leads to behavior or
work actions that results in higher productivity. Once the results are achieved, the
individual experiences an emotional response or feeling about what has transpired. This
response is shaped by several factors (economic or work-related compensation received
and/or attitude of others in the society/organization regarding the results achieved).
Critical to this emotional response is the mental congruency between values and the
results. Depending on this factor, the values may be altered, enhanced, or modified .
