Getting ready for your container garden

First you need to pick which container you want to use. Home Depot and Lowes both have great containers for reasonable prices. Make sure the container has good drainage at the bottom. If not consider placing a few large rocks at the bottom of the planter, or if possible drill your own holes for drainage.

Next you need to decide which plants to put in your container garden. Check out our popular plants page to get some ideas and information on popular container plants.

How many plants to place in your container depends on your container size. A smaller container may have around 3-4 plants and larger ones could have up to 6. When planting make sure to space plants evenly from themsevles, and from the wall of the container. Also make sure that they have room to grow and develop.

One example of plant placement is below. There are 3 plants in this container, evenly spaced.

Another example is below. There are more plants added, but they are still evenly spaced.

After planting make sure to water-in your plants. Continue to water, deadhead, and possibly fertilize your container garden to keep it looking its best. But most of all enjoy your garden!
