Notes for Video 18: Is Morality Relative?

• Moral relativism: there is no single true morality (and no one should impose values on another)

• Cultural values do not depend on objective moral standards
• Deciding what "human welfare" is depends on judgments that vary
• Emotivism: unlike statements of fact, moral judgments merely express feelings and recommend ways to behave

• Objection: there is a real difference between what is reasonable or fair and what is not (of course, considering the context)
• Even recognizing cultural differences, we can still disapprove of certain actions as immoral
