I first met Dan when I joined the Programme of African Sutdies at Norhwestern University in the fall of 1973. Always affable, it was not difficult to make friends with him.

For researchers he was as useful for his encyclopaedic memory of documents and books as for this love for debate on every conceivable topic or issue. He will be greatly missed by all of us who knew and loved him as a professional and friend.
