Something about Kuroshio Ocean Education Foundation. Principle: Our mission is to conserve, understand and educate the public about the marine environment around Taiwan and to preserve and document the oceanic culture of Taiwan. History: In 1996, the Taiwan Cetacean Survey Group conducted a study of the cetacean in the coastal water of Hualien, a small town at the east of Taiwan. A considerable number of cetacean of various species were found, they were spinner dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin, false killer whale, bottlenose dolphin, fraser¡¯s dolphin, and risso¡¯s dolphin. In order to direct resources towards conserving and understanding the marine ecosystem in which these creature live, numbers of the Survey Group founded the membership-based, non-government organization, the Kuroshio Ocean Education Foundation. I was the Secretary-general of this foundation in 2001-2002. And now, I am a counsellor of Kuroshio Ocean Education Foundation. Kuroshio: ¡°Kuroshio¡± is the Japanese name for the major, warm water current that flows north past the east coast of Taiwan towards Japan (¡°Kuro¡± means dark for the deep, dark blue colour of this body of water and ¡°shio¡± means current). It is the major branch of the North Equatorial Current that flows from North America to Asia before splitting into two branches (the other being the lesser Philippine Current). Kuroshio has an enormous influence on Taiwan¡¯s weather and ecological resources (both marine and terrestrial) and is the life force of Taiwan. KOEF Publications and Presentations: ¡°A survey of Cetaceans in the Waters of Central-Eastern Taiwan, 1996-1997¡± in Chinese. Cetacean Lives, a book that records the observations of cetaceans found in the coastal waters of eastern Taiwan. Finding the Cetaceans of Taiwan, a documentary film of the cetaceans found in the coastal waters of eastern Taiwan. In Search of Cetaceans in Kuroshio, an educational videotape of cetaceans and marine ecology. Presentation of the research plan for the historical Niaotashih Fishing Village of Hualien Harbor. |
