RESEARCH: Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD)
Submarine groundwater discharge has been recognized as an
important source of nutrients to the ocean. An active project on
the continental shelf off of South Carolina seeks to quantify the
role of nitrogen in submarine groundwater discharge in supporting
benthic macro algae growing in shelf sediments. A separate project
seeks to understand the role of submarine groundwater discharge in
distributions of DON and other biogeocheical parameters in the Gulf
of Mexico.
