Mathematics 311, Sec. 502, Fall, 1998
SKIP PAST THE ANNOUNCEMENTS if you so desire.
Course procedures and announcements:
- Dec. 9: After due consideration:
Your final exam will be slightly shorter than that for Spring '96, but
not nearly as short as the one for Fall '96. I think you will have no
trouble finishing, but do not be misled by my remarks in class Monday into
expecting to leave very early. There will be a mild emphasis toward the
material at the end of the course (Chapter 8 and Secs. 7.5-6).
- Dec. 4: The final review session will be WEDNESDAY 12/9 at 8:00
p.m. in Blocker 624. Also, I expect to be in my office on Thursday 12/10
from 11:30 to 1:00. I expect to be able to return all your remaining
homework papers at either of those times.
- Dec. 1: All three test keys are now for sale at Notes-n-Quotes.
- Nov. 30: YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BECOME A PUMPKIN!
Student CalcLab accounts will be destroyed on Friday, 18 December.
Open hours end Monday, 7 December, at midnight (after which CIS labs will
still be available).
- Nov. 10: The test on November 20 will cover Sections (4.2 and)
5.5 through 7.6. (NOTE: NOT 7.5 as I typed earlier today!)
- Nov. 4: URGENT!! ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE REPORT
PROGRAM? Read here!
- Oct. 25: Something long overdue: I really want to encourage
and help you to put your work on the Web, and to read what others have put
there, and also to discuss mathematics with specificity in e-mail and your
reviews and reports. I have compiled some links that may be useful.
(More useful would be for the state of the technology to advance so that
the process becomes easy and natural for all concerned. That is happening
slowly.)
- Information on the Web about
putting math on the Web. I urge all of you to read at least the first
item (the one from Swarthmore). The later items become increasingly
technical, and often refer to "solutions" that are not useful to us now
because not every reader has the necessary software. The whole page will
be of interest to those who might be interested in helping develop the
higher education of the future.
- Information about DVI viewers.
If you are unable to read the excellent homework papers of TeX users such
as David Robertson (M. 311, f96) and Andrew Barkley (M. 311, f98),
you should read this!
- On-line introductions to TeX.
If you want to learn to use TeX yourself, here is free documentation!
- Oct. 21: Next Monday's test will cover Chapters 4 and 5, EXCEPT
for Sections 4.2 (bases associated with curvilinear coordinates) and 5.5
(implicit functions), which will be covered on the next test.
- Oct. 10: The next help session will be WEDNESDAY, Oct. 14 (8:00
p.m.) After that, help sessions will be on Thursday (until Thanksgiving).
- Oct. 2: If you mailed a report earlier today, the
copy intended for the grader may be returned to you because of a system
failure. If so, please resend it to the address
stw7748@acs.tamu.edu
- List of misprints in the
book manuscript (LAST UPDATED Nov. 99)
- Sept. 10: There will be no help session next week (when I am
out of the country). The next help session (after tonight) will be
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 23.
- Sept. 10: The mathematics department has openings for suitably
qualified student workers to work in the departmental help sessions for
freshman level courses. The pay rate has been increased to 7$ per hour.
Application forms are available in BLOC 623.
- Sept. 8: The normal time for weekly help sessions will be
Thursday at 8:00 p.m. There will be exceptional weeks, however;
stay tuned for announcements. The place will be Blocker 624.
- Aug. 28: Here is Chapter 1 in page format, in case you have
not yet had a chance to buy the book. (Do not expect this service in the
future.) (Removed 10/5 to save disk space)
- Latest version of the
new textbook
in format optimized for screen reading. (DVI viewer required)
