Mathematics 311, Sec. 501, Spring 2000
SKIP PAST THE ANNOUNCEMENTS if you so desire.
._. (or to near the bottom)
Course procedures and announcements:
- May 2: The last installment of odd-numbered solutions is at
Notes-n-Quotes. This covers Chapter 8 and some of your class's recent
productions on earlier chapters.
- May 2: Last review session Thursday 7:45 p.m., Blocker 155.
- April 17: The "Third Month" odd solutions (through Chapter 7)
are now at Notes-n-Quotes.
- April 17: Recall that Wednesday's test will cover Sections 4.2
and 5.5 as well as Chapters 6 and 7.
Recall that I will have an extra office hour Wednesday morning,
9:10-11:00.
- April 6: SCHEDULE FOR REVIEW SESSIONS
- All are at 7:45 p.m. in Blocker 155.
- Thursday, April 13
- MONDAY, April 17 (Test is on Wednesday.)
- Thursday, April 27
- Thursday, May 4
- April 1: The key for Test B is now on the Web (below).
- March 27: The even solutions for Chapters 6 through 8
are available at Notes-n-Quotes.
- March 22: The second installment of odd solutions is available
at Notes-n-Quotes, along with copies of the transparencies for the
change-of-basis example I did in class this Monday.
- March 13: The review session will be in BLOCKER 135
at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23.
- March 7: Schedule for the week after spring break:
- Test B has been moved to FRIDAY, March 24 by popular demand.
- I can't meet my office hour that Thursday afternoon (because of
another graduate oral exam), and the Monday morning after spring break
seems a bit pointless for an office hour. Tentatively, office hours that
week will be Wednesday and Friday, 9:10-11:00 a.m. Check back here later
for confirmation.
- There will be an evening review/help session, probably Thursday,
March 23, at 8:00 p.m. Check back here later for place and
confirmation. Come to class on Monday, March 20, with written
suggestions for the review.
- There will be no change in the homework and reviewing schedule
for that week or the next.
- March 7: News about the exercise solution collections:
- PDF versions have been installed for all the DVI files in the
collection of even-numbered solutions. That whole collection will soon be
moved to another server (aggie.math.tamu.edu). (Steps will be taken to
assure that the links to it from this page still work.)
- Paper versions of all the even-numbered solutions from Chapters 4
and 5 ("Second Month") are on sale at Notes-n-Quotes.
- Odd-numbered solutions from Sections 4.1 through 5.4 ("Second Month")
will be made available at Notes-n-Quotes on Monday, March 20, in
accordance with our homework and test schedule. Probably the
rest of the even solutions (Ch. 6-8) will also be ready by then.
(No -- see update above, March 22.)
- Feb. 28: Office hour has been cancelled this Thursday
(March 2). (I need to attend a graduate oral exam.)
- Feb. 15: Special office hours this week:
- Tuesday 2:30-3:50
- Wednesday 9:10-11:00
- Thursday office hour cancelled
- Feb. 15: Notes-n-Quotes now has the following (available after
noon today):
- Solutions to even problems, First month
(Printout of the
Thomson solution manual)
- Solutions to odd problems, First month
(All available solutions from Fall 96, together with gap-filling
contributions from your class when available)
- Feb. 5: I have made PDF files from all the DVI files in
Thomson's solutions collection, Chapters 1 through 3. I do not have time
to link them to the web pages; to get at them, type in your browser window
the name of the DVI file, but with ".dvi" replaced by ".pdf".
- Feb. 5: Next office hour will be Monday, Feb. 14, 9:00-9:50
a.m.
- Jan. 14: Here is Chapter 1 in page format, in case you have
not yet had a chance to buy the book. (Do not expect this service in the
future.)
- Latest version of the
new textbook
in format optimized for screen reading. (DVI viewer required)
- List of misprints in the OLD
book manuscript (LAST UPDATED Jan. 2000)

- Web and TeX information: I really want to encourage
and help you to put your work on the Web, and to read what others have put
there, and also to discuss mathematics with specificity in e-mail and your
reviews and reports. I have compiled some links that may be useful.
(More useful would be for the state of the technology to advance so that
the process becomes easy and natural for all concerned. That is happening
slowly.)
- Information on the Web about
putting math on the Web. I urge all of you to read at least the first
two items (the one from Swarthmore, and the one from Karl's Calculus
Tutor about e-mail). The later items become increasingly
technical, and often refer to "solutions" that are not useful to us now
because not every reader has the necessary software. The whole page will
be of interest to those who might be interested in helping develop the
higher education of the future. (See also Pilant's Web
course if you have time to browse.)
- Information about DVI viewers.
If you are unable to read the excellent homework papers of TeX users such
as David Robertson (M. 311, f96) and Andrew Barkley (M. 311, f98),
you should read this!
- On-line introductions to TeX.
If you want to learn to use TeX yourself, here is free documentation!
