Junwei Lao

I am a Junior at Texas A&M University, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering. I have been a member of the Honors Engineering program since January 2025. To let you know me better, I will describe myself in detail.

I am fascinated by algorithms and operating systems, which combine abstraction and application. Algorithms represent the purest mathematical constructions, surpassing the limitations of natural phenomena and providing infinite opportunities for optimization and innovation. On the other hand, operating systems connect software to hardware, linking human ideas with real-world applications. They are the foundation that enables abstract computing ideas to interact with physical systems. These two fields together capture the most exciting essence of computer science for me: the opportunity to combine theory with practice.

Motivated by these interests, I joined the Honors Engineering Program at Texas A&M University. This opportunity allows me to explore research opportunities for undergraduate students and gain a deeper understanding of the academic aspects of science and engineering. I realized that research is only a part of personal growth. In order to connect theory with practice, I also participated in projects that applied computational concepts to real-world challenges. Some of the projects I have developed or am currently developing include

Texas A&M Events Chatbot designed to improve campus communication
Random walk property investigation that explores mathematical modeling
Machine learning-based analysis of NMR waveforms aimed at advancing chemical research

Each project has strengthened my technical skills while also teaching me the importance of persistence, collaboration, and adaptability. More importantly, they showed me how to transform abstract concepts into practical tools with potential meaning. Similar to the research experiences, you can find my projects on the Profolio page.

In addition to academics and projects, I believe that universities are also places to give back to the community, practice service and leadership values. Earlier this year, I served as the team leader for the Honor Engineering Division during the largest community service day, "Big Event" at Texas A&M, which you can find on the Service page. In this role, I helped former Aggies and members of the local community with fellow students. This experience taught me that personal growth not only comes from technological achievements, but also from the willingness to give back. Leading others and working for the benefit of the community enables me to apply the same values of problem-solving and teamwork in different but equally important contexts.
