The rules for doing theory homework
- You must do the solution, even if you are getting help
- It must be handwritten (yes I know some of you will hate that)
- Handwritten can be either scanned paper or handwritten with a stylus
- Avoid programs that fix your handwriting
- Show each step (I know it's hard to know what counts as a step)
- I'm ok with scribbling out bad/wrong work. Just be clear where.
- I'm ok with leaving the i=1 to n part off a summation as long as you know what it is
- You must put notations to the side of what you did in that step
- MS - Math simplification (basic algebra)
- BD - By Definition (inserting something defined before)
- Move sum (moving summation through or grouping summations)
- Zeros out (things that cancel or equal zero)
- Add 0 (adding and subtracting the same thing)
- Times 1 (multiply numerator and denominator by same thing)
- Rule of Expectations (following predefined rules for E[x])
- Rule of Variance (following predefined rules for Var[x])
- X is constant (moving values in/out of E or summation)
- Independence (Needed to move E/Sum through two variables)
Some tips and tricks
- When moving a summation through an equation put the sum on each term first
- Notice what things are indexed by the sum and what things are not indexed
- For E/Var notice what things are random, and what things are constant
