Mike's Tips on Behavioral Ecology

Are you still finishing up the school year? Or are you like Heather, teaching a new summer session schedule? When I took this course, all I needed was 3 more science credits to get my teaching certification. I had no background in behavior and all this scientific jargon seemed, frankly, of little use at the level that I teach. I survived and so can you!

Actually, I had fun in this course. I got to learn about stuff I have been watching on Animal Planet, and wanted to read more about. It reawakened my curiousity and helped keep me from going brain-dead.

The course is designed in a way that mirrors what we have been learning about in our education courses. So it was refreshing to see how someone had actually put into practice the principles of learning. For me, the "big picture" was about "sciencing"... the verb, not the noun. The textbook starts out with a simple model of foraging. Everyone can relate to that. Then it adds on one more layer in each chapter. First its predators, then competitors....finally mates and rivals. Helped me understand my kids' behaviors (no, just kidding).

Anyway, I am here to be your ally and guide to not only survive, but to thrive, in this course. The link to my BLOG is at the right.
