In June 2024, I volunteered as a camp counselor for the High Performance Research Computing (HPRC) GenCyber Camp at Texas A&M University. This camp, held over two weeks, was an immersive experience designed to inspire and educate aspiring computer scientists, developers, and engineers. It provided the campers with a comprehensive introduction to various computing fields, aiming to ignite their passion for technology.
The GenCyber Camp was part of the Summer Computing Academy hosted by HPRC. This program sought to enable high school students to explore the world of computing through hands-on activities, lectures, and guided projects.
As a camp counselor, my responsibilities included guiding the participants through various activities, providing technical support, and facilitating discussions on topics such as AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning), cybersecurity, and programming. One of the highlights of the camp was the AI/ML sessions where students were introduced to the basics of neural networks, data analysis, and predictive modeling using real-world examples.
I also assisted in organizing group projects, where campers worked together to solve complex problems, fostering teamwork and collaboration. These projects allowed the students to apply what they had learned in a practical setting, further solidifying their understanding of the material. In addition to the technical content, the camp also emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in technology, ensuring that the next generation of technologists is equipped not only with knowledge but also with a sense of responsibility.
Throughout the camp, I had the opportunity to mentor these young minds, answer their questions, and help them navigate the challenges they faced. Seeing their progress and enthusiasm was incredibly rewarding, as the experience was not only beneficial for the campers but also for me as a counselor. It taught me how to teach effectively and deepened my understanding of the subjects we covered. In conclusion, it was a fulfilling experience that allowed me to give back to the community while fostering the growth of future leaders in technology.
