Congratulations to Chih-Shen Cheng, Ph.D. Candidate and CIBER Lab researcher, on taking top honors at the 10th annual Texas A&M Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Chih-Shen placed first in the doctoral division and the overall competition for his presentation on "artificial intelligence and drones for disaster rercovery".

 

Dr. Behzadan delivered an invited keynote on "leveraging community-sourced artificial intelligence for scalable and equitable disaster resilience" at the 5th International Workshop on Advances in Resilient and Intelligent Cities (ARIC), which was held as part of the 30th ACM SIGSPATIAL Conference in Seattle, WA.

Md Nazmus Sakib, Ph.D. student and CIBER Lab researcher, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on "exploring the role of artificial intelligence and technology in workforce skilling". Sakib will officially graduate with a Ph.D. degree in summer 2022.

We are happy to debut the Artificial Intelligence and Built Environment Lab (Urban.AI Lab) at the Center for Infrastructure Renewal (CIR). In collaboration with other researchers at the CIR, the Urban.AI Lab will focus on advancing the interface between AI, human life, and the built environment.

Following the approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordination Board (THECB), COSC will offer the first-ever Ph.D. program in "construction science" in Texas and one of the few nationwide. The research-based program is STEM-coded and is expected to welcome its first cohort of Ph.D. students in Fall 2021.

CIBER Lab hosted a virtual event on citizen science for urban flood mapping to discuss how crowdsourcing and artificial intelligence (AI) can help obtain geotagged floodwater depth information from crowdsourced photos of submerged traffic signs in urban and rural environments.

Our AI-enabled flood mapping application, BluPix, which turns traffic signs into low-tech flood sensors, was featured on KHOU11 (CBS Houston). Through this citizen science project, we aim to make a real difference in the lives of people in flood-prone communities of Texas and beyond.

 

CIBER Lab's work on artificial intelligence (AI) for crowdsourced flood mapping was featured on "The Academic Minute", a production of WAMC in collaboration with the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The program airs on 70 stations around the U.S. and Canada.

CIBER Lab joins a team of researchers from Texas A&M University (lead), University of Florida, and University of Pennsylvania on this new $500K NSF cyber-human systems (CHS) project to work on bio-behavioral data analytics for personalized training ofcombat veterans in the future civilian workforce.

We will work on a newly funded study by TAMU Institute of Data Science, with researchers from Computer Science and PublicHealth to analyze multimodal audiovisual data from online conversational vlogs recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, and create a dataset offace, body and speech cues in web-mined COVID-19 conversational vlogs.

CIBER Lab alumnus, Dr. Reza Akhavian is named as one the ENR California's 2020 Top Young Professionals! This competition honors new AEC leaders, who have done exemplary work in using education and experience to complete public and private work while contributing to the common good, mentoring their colleagues, and developing technologies for fellow citizens. Congratulations Reza for making us proud!

 

Our new lab name is now official: Connected Informatics and Built Environment Research (CIBER) Lab. Slightly different name, but keeping the same acronym. CIBER Lab looks to the future!

Our conference paper on Project VERBIO, titled "virtual reality interfaces and population-specific models to mitigate public speaking anxiety", jointly written with HUBBS Lab (CSCE), received one of the only six nominations for the Best Paper Award at the 8th International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII) that was held in London, UK.

 

CIBER Lab will join forces with a multidesciplinary team of researchers from TAMU engineering, business school, and Center for Infrastructure Renewal (CIR) to develop a research roadmap for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in the construction industry, and the formation of a multi-institutional team working toward an NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC).

A collaborative project funded by the Engineering Information Foundation (EiF) will examine how wearable devices and VR can be used to provide personalized public speaking interventions. Researchers from CIBER Lab and HUBBS Lab (TAMU CSCE) will study variations in physiological indices and speech patterns to integrate bio-signals for speech assessment, and generate data-driven real-time feedback.

Dr. Behzadan has joined the Department of Technology and Construction Management (TCM) at Missouri State University (MSU) at the rank of Associate Professor. The TCM Department is part of the MSU College of Business and is housed in Glass Hall in the Springfield campus.

 

Dr. Akhavian has joined the School of Engineering at California State University East Bay (CSUEB) as Assistant Professor of Construction Engineering. Cal State East Bay is located in Hayward, on the eastern region of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The second edition of "Fundamentals of Wearable Computers and Augmented Reality" is now available from Taylor and Francis CRC Press. Chapter 14 of this book is a comprehensvie report on AR advances in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC), and is co-authored by Dr. Behzadan and two collaborators from the University of Michigan.

 

We are very happy to report that the 1st Women in Construction Workshop (WCW) was a great success! This 3-day event was held in Orlando, FL and was sponsored by a competitive grant from the EiF with the participation of 10 students from Brazil and China, invited faculty keynote speakers, and local and industry speakers.

DESIMAL researcher, Reza Akhavian successfully passed his Ph.D. candidacy exam. Reza's work is aimed at transforming the current state of construction simulation input modeling through the use of advanced machine learning, big data analysis, and forecasting methods. Congratulations Reza.

Ph.D. Student, Reza Akhavian receives a travel grant from the ASCE Construction Institute (CI). This year, the ASCE CI awarded only 13 student travel grants for the 2014 Construction Engineering Conference (CEC) that will be held in Seattle, WA on March 27-29, 2014. Reza and 12 other doctoral students from Georgia Tech, Purdue, Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Texas Austin, North Carolina State, and Texas A&M will represent thier programs in this event. The UCF Faculty Focus (Volume 11, Issue 2, Pages 5-6) featured an article titled "Educating the Millennial Student Generation: Challenges and Ways Forward" by Dr. Behzadan.

 

Dr. Behzadan received the 2012 Distinguished New Faculty Award during the 23rd International Conference on College Teaching and Learning. The Award pays tribute to new educators who are guiding the millennial students into the future. This award is designed to recognize new faculty by celebrating their current contributions to advancing education, and to encourage their future contributions to the teaching profession.

 

Dr. Behzadan received the Outstanding New Teacher Award from the Southeastern Section of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). The Award recognizes a faculty member who has less than four years of teaching experience and has demonstrated excellence in the classroom.

The ASCE-UCF Student Chapter received the overall 5th Place Award in the ASCE Southeast Student Competitions held in Tallahassee, FL. In total, 25 different schools attended the competitions and competed in several categories. ASCE-UCF also received the 3rd Place Award in Balsa Tower and the 2nd Place Award in Professional Paper competitions.

Dr. Andrew Yun (Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering) was the guest speaker of "Civil Engineering Measurements" class. His talk was titled "State-of-the-Art Monitoring Technologies for Civil Infrastructure Systems". He discussed several techniques from interdisciplinary fields including structural dynamics, smart sensing, data communication, and advanced data processing algorithms. Examples of field and laboratory validation tests on full-scale nonlinear viscous dampers, suspension bridges, retaining walls, slopes, and tunnels subjected to different loading conditions and long-term environmental effects were also presented.

UCF Chapter Wins Big in ASCE Southeastern Competitions: University of Central Florida's Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) sweeps prizes at the 2010 Southeastern Conference at Auburn University, AL. Among other prizes and recognitions, UCF wins the first prize in steel bridge competition, third prize in concrete canoe competition, and second prize for overall performance. With this win, the UCF steel bridge team advances to the ASCE national competitions which will take place at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) in May 2010.
